Brigitte Niedermair’s solo exhibition at the Museo di Palazzo Mocenigo is a dynamic interplay of the artist’s photographs – drawn from her archive of over twenty years of photographic practice – with the architecture and décor of the interconnected rooms of Palazzo Mocenigo.

Working with international photography curator Charlotte Cotton, Niedermair has responded to the distinct atmosphere of each room, and inserted her hallmark tableaux fashion and still life photographs into these historic environments that range from intimate to imposing scale. The synergy between the public and once-private interiors of this historic Mocenigo family palazzo – Venice’s Museum of fabrics and costume since 1985 – and Niedermair’s photographs is multilayered, with a tenor that shifts from room to room. Niedermair selected paintings from the Palazzo Mocenigo collection for de-installation, replacing them with her photographs to consciously amplify and counterargue with the embedded subtexts of gender and identity that permeate these predominantly 17th century interiors. The installation viewer gradually becomes aware that the only portrayed women that look out of the confines of their frames date from the 17th and 18th centuries, while their contemporary counterparts resist and turn away.

Niedermair’s intervention at the Museo di Palazzo Mocenigo re-animates the interiors and the narratives of gender that they hold. The exhibition is accompanied by Niedermair’s survey book Me and Fashion, published by Damiani Editore, which creates further context to the artist’s ongoing visual commentary on the representation of women and the meaning of fashion. Niedermair is an exceptional figure within the field of fashion image-making as both a female auteur and one who activates her female gaze within a male dominated image system.

Venice, 9 – 16 September 2018

The international festival dedicated to the art of glass returns with more than 180 different events including exhibitions, guided tours, conferences, workshops, performances and educational activities.

Comune di Venezia, Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia, Fondazione Cini/LE STANZE DEL VETRO, Istituto Veneto and Consorzio Promovetro Murano present the second edition of the festival that from 9th to 16th September will involve all the main institutions in the city, with several new additions.

From 9 to 16 September 2018, more than 150 participants, with a total of over 180 events across Venice, Mestre and Murano, will take part in the second edition of The Venice Glass Week, the major international festival dedicated to the art of glass, conceived to celebrate the artistic and economic resource for which Venice is famous around the world.

The event is promoted by the Town Council of Venice and conceived by three of Venice’s principal cultural institutions with considerable experience and expertise in the field of glass – Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia, Fondazione Giorgio Cini and Istituto Veneto di Scienze, Lettere ed Arti – along with the most important trade association, the Consorzio Promovetro Murano, which also manages the Vetro Artistico® Murano trademark of the Veneto Region. This year’s edition has again attracted a large number of participants, with a 20% increase over the first year’s festival.

Hundreds of applications were originally submitted for review and selection by the curatorial committee that was introduced this year, chaired by the Venetian glass historian Rosa Barovier Mentasti, and including critics and curators Chiara Bertola and Jean Blanchaert, journalist and editor of the German magazine Neues Glas Uta Klotz, and chemist, university teacher and expert in the composition of glass materials Marco Verità. The high volume of applications, from foundations, art galleries, museums – among which we note the participation for the first time of the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, Palazzo Fortuny and Museo di Storia Naturale -, cultural institutions, universities and advanced education institutes, as well as glass furnaces, companies, artists and private Italian and foreign collectors, confirms the dynamism and vitality of Venice’s cultural scene, and provides a strong indication of the local and international interest in the field of glass.

The rich and expansive programme for The Venice Glass Week festival will involve varied and widespread events across the district, which this year also extends to the mainland, with Mestre now one of its main centres, along with Venice and Murano. The events, most with free entrance, will all have artistic glass as their main theme and be aimed at audiences of all ages: exhibitions, guided tours, conferences, seminars, prize-giving ceremonies, film screenings, educational activities, parties, drinks receptions, open studios and a non-competitive night-time race around the candle-lit streets, canals and glass-furnaces of Murano.

MUSEO DI PALAZZO MOCENIGO‘S PROGRAMME

Installation: Chiara Antonietti – Babette’s Feast
From 9 to 16 September 2018, 10am-5pm, closed on Mondays.

Chiara Antonietti will present in the dining room of Palazzo Mocenigo a site-specific work with objects blown in the furnace and others created using the glass-fusion technique using the “filigree” murrine.
The murrine will be embroidered on the fabric in order to create an uninterrupted “thread” between each object, thereby creating a dialogue between the traditional local handicrafts that are being lost: the embroidery of Burano, the blown glass of Murano and the fabrics of Venice. For years the artist has learned and used the artisan techniques that are at risk of disappearing, such as the ancient techniques of glassmaking and of Burano lace.
Chiara Antonietti was born in Turin and has been working with glass in Murano since 2007.

Installation: Michael Zyw – Noah’s Dream
From 9 to 16 September 2018, 10am-5pm, closed on Mondays.

Noah’s Dream – il Sogno di Noé – is a glasswork inspired by a dream of love for the protection of the earth, people, the environment, of nature and also of the vine. This work is in part abstract and was made in the glassworks of Murano in 2014, it has a very slight similarity to the famous Giovanni Bellini painting Ebbrezza di Noé of which the artist was not aware at the time of creating the glasswork. It is accompanied at the Palazzo Mocenigo by Vineyard, and by Calice 5, necessary for the production and tasting of the wine in this dream! Nascita, 2015, watercolour of dimensions 130 x 200 cms is an homage to Giovanni Bellini and the wonderful creativity of Venetian art over the centuries.
Contributor: Fondazione Bertarelli

Conference: LIGHT ON – AUTONOMA
Museo di Palazzo Mocenigo
13th September 2018, 11am

Marcantonio Brandolini d’Adda will be presenting to the public the project of “Autonoma Murano”, which has the mission to preserve and disseminate this incredible tradition of Muranese glass, and at the same time, enrich it further with a diversity of new techniques and ideas.
The program has been developed in collaboration with the Pilchuck Glass School in order to create a place where everyone has an opportunity to discover what Murano is and what the glass tradition is still capable of offering, thereby creating a new link between “tradition and modernity”, between Murano and the rest of the glass world. In this conference Marcantonio will be explaining how the two pilot years have been so far, and what will be the future of this venture.

Venice, Museum of Palazzo Mocenigo

_

Sometimes I see beauty in things that other people find strange or are even repulsed by. I become fascinated when there is something you do not want to see and the feeling you get when you do not want to look at something, yet you still do. My jewellery deals with the tension that lies between attraction and repulsion. I take seemingly inappropriate materials, making ordinary and familiar objects seem extraordinary and unfamiliar. In the 18th century many new breeds of animals and plants were discovered and it was the main era of cabinets of curiosities. People collected rarities because it gave them the feeling of being in the presence of something extraordinary and marvellous. The cabinets of curiosities were not meant to sympathize with the creatures on display, only marvel over their oddity. In a world where not many new and exotic breeds are discovered I use dead creatures in my pieces to evoke wonder. The creatures are transformed and reborn; given a new life as objects of astonishment.

Märta Mattsson

Märta Mattsson was born in Stockholm, Sweden and has studied jewellery art at HDK-School of Design and Crafts in Gothenburg, Hiko Mizuno College of Jewellery in Tokyo, Rhode Island School of Design in Providence and at the Royal College of Art in London. She has exhibited her work internationally at galleries and fairs in both solo exhibitions and group exhibitions since 2006. Märta has given workshops and lectures around the theme of her work in countries like China, Belgium, Mexico, USA, Sweden and Chile. Märta’s work is based on the tension that exists between attraction and repulsion. She takes seemingly inappropriate materials, making ordinary and familiar objects seem extraordinary and unfamiliar. She uses materials from dead animals in her pieces to evoke wonder. The creatures are transformed and reborn and are given a new life as objects of astonishment.

25 – 27 May 2016

_

CALL FOR PAPERS

_

The International Center of Studies of Costume and Textile member of the network of Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia intends to organize in May 2016 an international conference regarding the history, production, trade and use of Venetian Textiles.

Textile production in Venice was one of the Republic’s primary industries, accompanying the city’s history from its earliest days. Its quality and design, flanked by the mercantile genius of the Venetian traders, have made it the leading export product. Thanks to the economic and social connotations acquired, Venetian Textiles have been a part of the social history of Europe and Asia for a long period.

The aim of this conference is to bring together the individuals and knowledge acquired, together with the latest discoveries concerning the Venetian Fabrics. The goal of the organizers is to create a network of scholars from various disciplines and of a wide range of historical periods, in order track the current scholarly knowledge regarding the Venetian Textiles.

This will be made within the historical context of the city, taking in mind the history of textile in both the medieval and modern mercantile activities. A further objective is to create a map of the principal collections of Venetian Textiles around the world, their development through the evolution of collecting, their conservation and their accessibility and value to scholars.

The meeting will conclude with a round table discussion which will results to the formation of a committee of scholars. This will aim to promote the study and documentation of Venetian textiles. The conference will be held at Mocenigo Palace – Study Center of Textile and Costume.

The conference will follow a publication of the proceedings. The proceedings will be published next year in Italian and English. To this end, the organizing committee will accept proposals for participation from scholars and curators from various disciplines on the following subjects

Now offering its exclusive Perfume Trail, Palazzo Mocenigo inaugurates three new spaces on the ground floor on June 5.
Perfume Workshop
Multimedia Room
White Room: “The Rape of Venice”

From June, 6th, 2015

_

Thanks to the collaboration and support of MAVIVE, as of June 6, 2015, the Venetian museum will have its own Multimedia Room, a Perfume Workshop with courses for the public and for professionals and a White Room for temporary events.

The exciting multi-sensorial installation called The Rape of Venice, by Andrea Morucchio, inaugurates the new space and is part of the “Muve Contemporaneo” programme. The cultural offering of the surprising Museo di Palazzo Mocenigo in Venice is thus further expanded.

Enlarged and renewed in November 2013 in terms of itinerary and layout on the basis of a project by architect, director and scenographer Pier Luigi Pizzi, and with a new and important section dedicated to perfume, Palazzo Mocenigo now inaugurates – again thanks to the partnership between the Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia and Mavive, the Venetian company belonging to the Vidal family – three new spaces on the ground floor of the historic building, including a perfume workshop for the public and for professionals: a unique feature in the Italian museum world.

While, therefore, on the piano nobile (first floor), there are six rooms dedicated to scent perfectly integrated into the displays of the rest of the museum, multimedia and sensory experiences alternate in an unprecedented succession of information, emotion and learning, on the ground floor – as of June 6 – the doors will open to Multimedia Room, a well-equipped Perfume Laboratory and a White Room: a space devoted to temporary events, the first of which, as part of the “Muve Contemporary” programme, will be the multi sensory installation The Rape of Venice by Andrea Morucchio.

Six interactive stations will be available to visitors in the new multimedia room, to learn more following the visit to the displays on the first floor of Palazzo Mocenigo, while the laboratory – a professionally equipped room stocked with more than 200 essences – will for the first time in Italy offer introductory and specialisation courses in the world of perfumery and the creation of scents, guiding participants in the creation of their own personal fragrance. All thanks to the support of the Chamber of Commerce of Venice.

Organised by teachers from Mavive Parfums in collaboration and in synergy with the Educational Services of the Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia, the laboratory will offer activities aimed at different audiences: a basic workshop for adults implemented as early as June, to be followed, from September, by activities for schools and families and the professional courses for specialists in the field in collaboration with international scientific institutes, including the University of Ferrara, the Accademia del Profumo, Cosmetica Italia and Drom.

Using multimedia back-up and an olfactory approach, participants will be accompanied on a fascinating journey between cultures and different geographical areas, exploring the classification of the bases of perfumes, the concept of the olfactory pyramid and knowledge of the most important raw materials. And thanks to a kit that is supplied and the guidance of their teacher, participants will themselves create a personal fragrance to take home.

The sense of smell and the other senses of visitors to Palazzo Mocenigo will be awakened also by the absolutely enthralling installation by Andrea Morucchio, a Venetian artist born in 1967 who has over the years developed an interesting multidisciplinary artistic approach.

The collaboration between the Fondazione MUVE and Mavive has made it possible to equip the beautiful museum in San Stae also with a new space for temporary exhibitions. The first event, curated by Matteo Bertelè and Vittorio Urbani with project manager Marco Vidal (until November 22) could only be dedicated to Venice. Making perfect use of a sense of synesthesia, in The Rape of Venice – under the patronage of the Veneto Region – Morucchio leads visitors to reflect, immersing them in the whirl of this extraordinary city, with all its beauty and its contradictions, amid monuments, lights, the noise of boats and of tourists, and all its smells.

Seeking empathy with the visitor in the installation space, the artist touches on the most delicate and topical matters concerning the preservation of the historic lagoon city, accompanying visitors from a feeling of instability and confusion – in a growing climax that involves all the senses – to the liberating discovery of a scent that is the truest and most original of Venice: the scent of cold seaweed that is a “feeling of supreme bliss” and “synonymous with happiness”, according to Josif Brodsky in “Fondamenta degli Incurabili”.

The fragrance wafts through the space in which the installation has been installed and is an intense, living scent, both marine and vegetable at the same time, which, combined with the dampness of the stones exuding the typical salty smell of the space, is the true scent of Venice. Created by skilled master perfumers of Mavive after months of research and olfactory analysis of the lagoon, it is diffused using technological instruments that introduce the visitor into a surreal atmosphere.

“The Essence of Venice” will also be a fragrance that visitors can take home: prepared by perfumer Maurizio Cerizza of AFM, it has been sampled and reproduced in a limited series of small bottles containing the essence of Venice. A souvenir to remind you that the fate of the city depends on respect of the natural environment.

NEW ITINERARIES AT PALAZZO MOCENIGO.
Between fashion and fragrances

From November 2013, Palazzo Mocenigo
Centro Studi di Storia del Tessuto e del Costume

The project restyling of the museum of Palazzo Mocenigo, supported by the Soprintendenza ai Beni Architettonici e Paesaggistici di Venezia e Laguna and the City of Venice, has the scientific supervision of Pierluigi Pizzi, the internationally acclaimed architect, set and costume designer, and is carried out under the scientific direction of Gabriella Belli, director of the Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia and curated by Chiara Squarcina, curator of the museum.

The redesign of the museum provides a wide range of interventions that include the full restoration of the wall hangings, the restoration of antique furniture of the palace, the recovery of about 150 artifacts from the rich collections of the Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia, currently in storage, and of a series of historical Venetian paintings from the Museo Correr, the restoration of antique laboratory equipments, such as ampoules and other objects, always coming from the Museo Correr, the restoration of precious 18th-century furniture from the sotrerooms of Ca ‘Rezzonico – Museum of 18th-century Venice and other museums of the Foundation.

Along the new museum itinerary, visitors can rediscover the atmosphere of the original 18th-century environment and have a comprehensive framework of the habits and customs of that period, thanks to exhibition spaces dedicated to the most important nucleus of textiles, clothing and accessories of the 18th-century conservated in the Center for Studies of the History of Textiles and Costume of Palazzo Mocenigo.

Inside the new path an unprecedented museological proposal dedicated entirely to the history of perfume and essences, which will be arranged by MAVIVE SpA, the main partner in this exciting operation geared to the revival and promotion of the museum venue. In this way, MAVIVE will underscore the historic link between Venice and perfume, integrating ancient artifacts, including the cosmetic handbook I Notandissimi Secrets de l’Arte Profumatoria (G. Rossetti, Venice 1555), and “olfactive waypoints” along the museum layout to offer a new way to explore the history of perfume and fragrances.

Join the project also the well-known German fragrance house Drom, which will provide scientific and technical support for installations on perfume and will display a selection of its extraordinary collection of Storp perfume bottles (one of the most important in the world, with more than 2,500 items and pieces dating up to 2,000 BC).

Are involved in the project also Cosmetica Italia (ex Unipro), the association of Italian cosmetic companies, with the loan of his librarian fund, the creation of a video documentary, educational support and retrieval of historical material, the Camera di Commercio di Venezia, with an important economic contribution, and the Course of Cosmetology of the Università di Ferrara, which will provide scientific advice and will organize olfactory seminars.
