TEXTILE NON TEXTILE

Four contemporary artists – Franco Costalonga, Nadia Costantini, Gea D’Este, and Claudia Steiner – will be the protagonists of the “Tessuto non Tessuto” (non-woven fabrics) exhibition, curated by Dino Marangon. Varying in age and style, they will be reacting to a combination of history and new experiences. The very theme of the exhibition, non-woven fabric, supplies them with the pretext for a fascinating investigation of contemporary forms, forms that the advent of new technologies has led to innovative and surprising experiences, thanks to the use of newly-introduced materials, able to respond identically to functions commonly attributed to fabric, despite being without its essential characteristic, that of being a weave of fibres.

Franco Costalonga, for instance, who has been exploring the perceptive processes since the 1960s, makes use of non-woven fabric typical of his time yet still extremely topical, while with her airy forms, Nadia Costantini produces works that are both costume and structure, made by precisely cutting polyethylene, acetate, teflon and even steel. Gea D’Este works in a more reflective setting and tests alternative, and for the most part industrial, materials, processed in the studio in large floor canvases. Finally, Claudia Steiner, a painter and ceramist, uses the museum space to try and recreate the memory of fabric with imitation cushions, with only a single thread to bear witness to the lost materiality.
