Masterpieces from Storp Collection

From September 6, 2014 to January 6, 2015
Palazzo Mocenigo, Venice

The Storp family, which founded Drom Fragrances in Munich in 1911, has for generations applied competence and passion in building up a rare and highly important collection of flasks and containers for perfumes. Today, it has a total of 3,000 items covering six millennia of history. A significant selection of these works now forms the core of a new section in the refurbished museum of Palazzo Mocenigo dedicated to the history of perfume and fragrances, realised in collaboration with MAVIVE and also with the support of the celebrated German firm. To explore this fascinating subject, the most important flasks in the Drom collection will be displayed in a section describing the virtuosity and creativity of the craftsmen who specialised in making articles to contain perfume: from the Middle Ages to the present day. Exclusive works of art, these tiny yet precious containers celebrate an ancient art that developed in the Middle East and then spread to Greece and Rome, before returning to Asia and back to Venice at the time of the Crusades. They form the centrepiece of a manufacturing sector dubbed “minor”, but with a significant historical significance. The fundamental role played by Venice in the origins of perfume in terms of aesthetics, cosmetics and commerce, is highlighted in the new section of the museum dedicated to perfume.
