The Library

The Library of the Study Centre of the History of Textiles, Costumes and Perfume was set up in 1985 and is housed in Palazzo Mocenigo at San Stae.

This rich collection of monographs, periodicals and fashion plates all comes from the former collection of the International Centre for Arts and Costume at Palazzo Grassi, which was acquired by the Venice City Council in 1981. The sizeable collection of books dedicated to the history of textiles and costume make this a very useful instrument for study and research.

The core collection from Palazzo Grassi comprises some 6,000 volumes, including antique publications, whilst the periodicals section covers fashion magazines from the end of the 18th century, when such publications first became popular, to the present day. There is also a particularly significant collection of around some 13,000 fashion plates, which form a unique visual record of changing fashions.

Re-opened to the public in 1986 after re-organisation, the library is now kept up to date by the acquisition of the most significant and authoritative publications in this sector, both books and periodicals.

Catalogue and collections

The card index catalogue is located in the second reading room of the Mocenigo Library.

This comprises two catalogues:

– one relating to the International Centre for Arts and Costume (the Palazzo Grassi collection, with material published up to the mid 1970s), which is organised according to author, title and subject;

– one covers all the post-1980 acquisitions of the Palazzo Mocenigo Study Centre of the History of Textiles, Costumes and Perfume, which can be consulted either in order of author and title or in order of subject. This makes for easy and rapid identification of the documents desired.

Available online. The online catalogue of acquisitions can be consulted online.
It covers publications acquired since 2000; the earlier acquisitions are still being catalogued.

Historical Archives. The Library contains more than 20,000 publications – books, opuscules, periodicals and fashion plates. These are divided into monographs and opuscules dealing with the main topics relating to this sector (clothing, the history of costume, etc.); present and past periodicals covering fashions, textiles and costume; fashion encyclopaedias catalogues of exhibitions in the clothing and textile sectors; fashion plates (not catalogued).

Prints & drawings cabinet

Part of the collection acquired in 1981 from the former International Centre for Arts and Costume, the fashion plates in the Palazzo Mocenigo Library provide an ample visual record of European fashions in the nineteenth and twentieth century.

The detail of the illustrations is of high technical quality because most of these plates were produced for those who wished to adapt their wardrobe to the latest fashions.

Divided chronologically and according to type, these works are not only of great artistic interest in their own right but also provide an ample record of children’s clothing and of day and evening fashions and accessories for men and women.

Collections

The Grassi bibliographic collection on textiles and costume originates from the International Centre for Arts and Costume, formerly located at Palazzo Grassi. It comprises approximately 8,000 publications, including monographs and collected works, among which are several rare and early editions.

Acquisitions on textiles and costume from 1986 to the present day, totaling more than 5,000 volumes, thanks to purchases and exchanges with some of the world’s most prestigious libraries.

The periodicals collection includes fashion magazines covering a time span from the late eighteenth century—when such publications first began to circulate—to the present day. The collection currently comprises 335 titles.

The engravings and fashion plates preserved in the Library of the Study Centre for the History of Textiles and Costume at Palazzo Mocenigo belong to the collection acquired by the Municipality of Venice in 1981 from the former International Centre for Arts and Costume. They provide a broad and detailed overview of European fashion during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

The garments are depicted with remarkable technical skill and often achieve significant artistic quality, as many of these illustrations served an educational purpose for those wishing to adapt their attire to the latest fashion trends of the time.

Organized chronologically and by category, the collection offers valuable documentation on women’s, men’s, and children’s clothing and accessories, including both daywear and evening wear.

In 1949, Venice became the ideal setting for celebrating the partnership between the textile industry and haute couture fashion houses. In 1951, industrialist Franco Mariotti founded the International Centre for Arts and Costume (CIAC) at Palazzo Grassi, organizing countless fashion-related events.
The events promoted by the CIAC can be regarded as true visual records of the evolution of costume and fashion, documenting trends, styles, and cultural changes over time.

This collection consists of 342 rare and valuable printed volumes on beauty, cosmetics, and perfume. The books originate from the library of Cosmetica Italia (formerly Unipro) in Milan and have been generously granted on long-term loan to the Library of the Study Centre for the History of Textiles and Costume at Palazzo Mocenigo.
