Palazzo Mocenigo Museum

With over seventy items of clothing from the most famous collections, fashion maison and costume designers in the world, a documentary video made by Rai5 and spectacular clothes, Trame di moda – Donne e stile alla Mostra del Cinema di Venice is the exhibition that Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia will present, opening on 2 September at Palazzo Mocenigo – Study Centre of the History of Fabrics and Costumes.
The exhibition was designed and curated by Fabiana Giacomotto, a writer and teacher of the Science of Fashion and Costume at the Sapienza University in Rome, together with Alessandro Lai, a costume designer and art historian. With a high-impact installation curated by Sergio Colantuoni and coordinated by C.S. in the evocative rooms of the ground floor and piano nobile of Palazzo Mocenigo,it offers visitors a comparison between costumes from great films that were filmed in Venice, the current fashion that drew inspiration from these films and ideas, and the valuable items of clothing preserved in the museum.
The itinerary includes the eighteenth century andrienne of Palazzo Mocenigo that converse with the dress of the clockwork doll designed by Danilo Donati for Federico Fellini’s Casanova, and the priceless reinterpretation by Karl Lagerfeld and Fendi for a historical ball at Palazzo Corsini, as well as the delicate evening gowns designed by Piero Tosi for Silvano Mangano in Death in Venice or by Sandy Powell for The Wings of the Dove that were clearly the inspiration for the most fanciful stylists today, such as Roberto Cavalli, Ermanno Scervino, Francesco Scognamiglio, and Giambattista Valli.
It draws on nine films with a corresponding number of female models and historic periods, from Mambo and Summertime to Senso, Anonymous Venetian, Death in Venice, Casanova, The Talented Mr Ripley, The Wings of the Dove and The Tourist.
An innovative excursus to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the Venice Film Festival, of which a significant part will be reserved for the great red carpet dresses from the last fifty years and the actresses who wore them: Anna Magnani, Gina Lollobrigida, Valentina Cortese, Gwyneth Paltrow, Anne Hathaway, Paz Vega, Keira Knightley, Alba Rohrwacher, Tilda Swinton, Eva Mendes and Madonna.

Organised by Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia together with SAE Comunicazione Intergrata and Sartoria Tirelli Costumi – Fondazione Tirelli Trappetti, the exhibition will be open until 6 January 2013 during the regular opening hours of Palazzo Mocenigo Museum.
